چکیده

Based on the measured data and characteristics of sea ice temperature distribution in space and time, this study is intended to consider a parabolic partial differential equation of the thermodynamic field of sea ice coupled by snow, ice, and sea water layers with a time-dependent domain and its parameter identification problem. An optimal model with state constraints is presented with the thicknesses of snow and sea ice as parametric variables and the deviation between the calculated and measured sea ice temperatures as the performance criterion. The unique existence of the weak solution of the thermodynamic system is proved. The properties of the identification problem and the existence of the optimal parameter are discussed, and the oneorder necessary condition is derived. Finally, based on the nonoverlapping domain decomposition method and semi-implicit difference scheme, an optimization algorithm is proposed for the numerical simulation. Results show that the simulated temperature of sea ice fit well with the measured data, and the better fit is corresponding to the deeper sea ice.

Optimality Conditions of a Three-Dimension Non-smooth Thermodynamic System of Sea Ice

This study is intended to provide the mathematical foundation for the numerical computation of the parameter identification problems of the three-dimensional two-layer thermodynamic system of sea ice. The non-smooth thermodynamic system with mixed boundary conditions is established, its properties are obtained and the first-order necessary conditions of the parameter identification problem of t...

Improving the WRF model’s (version 3.6.1) simulation over sea ice surface through coupling with a complex thermodynamic sea ice model (HIGHTSI)

Sea ice plays an important role in the air–ice– ocean interaction, but it is often represented simply in many regional atmospheric models. The Noah sea ice scheme, which is the only option in the current Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (version 3.6.1), has a problem of energy imbalance due to its simplification in snow processes and lack of ablation and accretion processes in ice. ...

Toward Construction of an Efficient, Lead-Resolving PIPS Model

Our long-term goals are to develop and implement lead-based sea ice rheologies in a high-resolution anisotropic sea ice model that is able to efficiently simulate and predict the initialization and propagation of oriented leads and ridges of sea ice. Our particular interest is to provide such a lead-resolving sea ice model for the Navy’s Polar Ice Prediction System (PIPS) for high-resolution, l...

Modeling Sea Ice as a Granular Material, Including the Dilatancy Effect

A dynamic sea ice model based on granular material rheology is presented. The sea ice model is coupled to both a mixed layer ocean model and a one-layer thermodynamic atmospheric model, which allows for an ice albedo feedback. Land is represented by a 6-m thick layer with a constant base temperature. A 10-year integration including both thermodynamic and dynamic effects and incorporating prescr...

A method for sea ice thickness and concentration analysis based on SAR data and a thermodynamic model

An analysis of ice thickness distribution is a challenge, particularly in a seasonal sea ice zone with a strongly dynamic ice motion field, such as the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Canada. We present a novel automated method for ice concentration and thickness analysis combining modeling of sea ice thermodynamics and detection of ice motion on the basis of space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)...
